Palace of Placentia - Greenwich, London

During a recent visit to Greenwich with the Historical Novel Society, history was revealed in

The Undercroft (cellars) hidden beneath the Old Royal Naval College.
It was here, in 1427, the Duke of Gloucester started building a palace near the river named Bella Court.
In 1447, Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI, renamed it the Palace of Placentia.
Henry V11 did extensive rebuilding and here, in 1491, that Henry V111 was born.
He lived here with Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn.
Elizabeth 1 was born at Placentia in 1533.
By the mid 1600, after falling into disrepair, the palace was demolished and rebuilt in the classic style by Charles 11.
